Our dream is see every follower of Jesus unleashed to express and proclaim Jesus in their unique sphere of influence. We\u2019re a work in progress in the lab of Portland, but here\u2019s some current thoughts\/tips that might be helpful as you engage your natural sphere of influence in relationship. We would love your feedback as we continue to develop tools and resources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#1 \u2013 D<\/strong><b>istinguish yourself in the workplace\u00a0<\/b>(or neighborhood) with excellence, integrity<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Position yourself as a safe, approachable, accepting, honest and authentic person. A person that people know and have access to.<\/li>\n<li>Listen \u2013 ask questions seeking to learn and understand.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t fix or speak in platitudes. Life is nuanced.<\/li>\n<li>Work for excellence out of your identity in Christ<\/li>\n<li>Have integrity in the little things.<\/li>\n<li>Be apart of making all things new in your context, city, neighborhood.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>#2<\/b>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<strong>Give people access to your life.<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s in these moments that trust is built. Extend invitations and show up in third spaces and meals with people that don\u2019t know Jesus \u2013 watch football, enjoy happy hour, go to coffee. \u00a0(Warning: don\u2019t settle for beer and pizza friends)<\/p>\n<p>All you have to do is ask. \u201cWould you be up for grabbing a coffee\/Le Croix\/beer sometime? I\u2019d love to hear more about what\u2019s going on in your world.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Learn their story \u2013 ask questions and listen. Be present!<\/li>\n<li>Pay attention to things that are said that are openings to deeper things of substance and ask follow up questions.<\/li>\n<li>Begin to identify how the gospel might be good news to them (see #5).<\/li>\n<li>Exercise the appropriate invitation (i.e. risk) for the amount of relationship you have with the person.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>#3 \u2013 Go deeper<\/strong>\u00a0(and spark curiosity) with a transition statement like\u2026 \u00a0(similar to how Jesus sparked curiosity)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201c I know you probably don\u2019t have the same faith background as me, but when _____ \u00a0happened the only thing that sustained me and gave me peace and hope in a situation like yours was leaning into my faith\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>\u201c I don\u2019t know what kind of faith background you have, so I\u2019m curious in how you deal with that stress or pain or loneliness?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u00a0#4<\/b>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<b>Prep for the next convo<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 If your conversation is cut short, in future contact remind them that you were paying attention and care about them by asking a follow up question. \u2014-\u00a0<em>\u201chow\u2019s it going with your Dad who is struggling with health\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>#5<\/b>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<b>Be a messenger of a better story<\/b>\u2013 \u00a0Talk about what is good news to them. What element of the kingdom of God and the work that Jesus has done is good news to the person you\u2019re talking to.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is profound acceptance<\/li>\n<li>That there is the possibility for healing<\/li>\n<li>That your identity doesn\u2019t have to depend on\u00a0success at work<\/li>\n<li>That there is hope that things are going to get better<\/li>\n<li>That you are uniquely made<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>#6<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 In light of the trust and relationship you have<strong>\u00a0ask for their thoughts<\/strong><strong>\/response\u00a0and ask for permission to share more.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Do you have a faith journey?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>What do you think about Jesus or God?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Sometime I\u2019d love to share what\u2019s gone on in my life. Would that be alright?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>#7<\/b>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<b>Get personal.<\/b>\u00a0Share your story, \u00a02-3 sentences that points to the good news of Jesus and his kingdom. Avoid words like gospel, sin, church, lost. Use words like purpose, peace, hope, healing, made whole, following Jesus. Look for opportunities to share a broader understanding of the\u00a0story of the Bible.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Discuss the 4 chapter gospel \u2013 The world was good, it was broken, Jesus made a way for it to be healed and one day it\u2019ll be fully restored with no more pain and no more brokenness.<\/li>\n<li>Make it relational \u2013 limit your dependence on a booklet, talk like a real person, do it by drawing it if needed.<\/li>\n<li>Invite them to respond \u2013 is that something you\u2019ve ever considered.
