Our university, like most, has dirt paths created by repeated foot traffic. These quick routes off the sidewalks are called “desire paths.”
I know groundskeepers resent them; the destruction of the turf, the erosion, and the accompanying mud. Students, and at least a few faculty, like them. Who doesn’t want shortcuts in our busy days?
In attempting to live out my faith in the academy, I can be guilty of walking on my own path — rather than the path God has established. For example, my desire path has been to simply live as a Christian and hope, expect, even assume that my fellow professors, staff and students will “see” that I’m a follower of Christ and in turn want to become one themselves.
Always Being Ready
I have been placing the burden on others to figure out the Christ in me. Not outward in my witness, but elusive, enigmatic, safe, comfortable. But not really in line with Scripture like 1 Peter 3:15 that talks about always being ready to give an account for the hope I have.
I’m realizing now that I want to use the “existing sidewalk” that God has established for me to share Christ with others.
When I ask someone how they are doing, I can’t keep walking past them before they respond. I need to stop and listen with my heart, so I don’t miss the opportunity to be an ambassador for Christ in that moment.
Stop. Go Back.
An example: arriving at the office one morning, I noticed a colleague who looked particularly weary. I greeted her as I passed her enroute to my desk. Setting down my bag and turning on my computer, I found myself thinking, “Stop. Go back.”
So, I went back to her office. I inquired how she was doing and asked if there was anything I could do to help her. She opened up about feeling overwhelmed, and was unsure if she could succeed in her new position.
The Hope
I listened. With her permission, I prayed for her to have courage and the ability to excel. I reassured her that because God loves her and cares about her work, she can look to Him for guidance.
As I journey with God down His desire path, I’m anticipating many more opportunities to bring the hope of Jesus to others.
