As I\u2019ve been reading the book of Colossians, I\u2019ve been struck by the scope of what God calls us to as professors.\u00a0 It motivates me to think beyond the confines of my natural inclinations and previous models of what it means to be a Christian professor.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

A Comprehensive Mission<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

The Apostle Paul says, \u201cFor by Him all things were created…all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.<\/em>\u00a0(Col. 1:16-17). The Dutch theologian\u00a0Abraham Kuyper\u00a0<\/a>said, \u201cThere is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, \u2018Mine!\u2019\u201d You can\u2019t get more comprehensive than that!

This mission is echoed in the\u00a0FC Mission statement<\/a>:\u00a0\u201c<\/em><\/strong>Faculty Commons wants to help you bring the resources of the university\u2026to the world for the advance of the loving rule and reign of Jesus Christ.<\/em>\u201d
\u00a0
The mission God has called us to goes beyond our departments and our campuses to the whole world!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

A Constraining Campus Culture<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Later, Paul lets loose one of his \u201czingers\u201d: \u201cWhatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus…<\/em>\u201d (Col. 3:17). \u201cAll\u201d means all \u2013 yet we as Christian faculty often struggle to grasp Christ\u2019s call on campus. Why?

One reason is the\u00a0deformative influences<\/em><\/u>\u00a0of campus culture. Like a culture of\u00a0identity capital<\/em>\u00a0not rooted in Christ, leading to overt careerism or covert pragmatism (\u201cI just need to keep my head down right now\u201d). Or the culture of\u00a0professed busyness<\/em>. As NY Times essayist\u00a0Tim Kreider\u00a0<\/a>said, \u201c[Y]ou\u2019ve probably had to listen to a lot of people tell you how busy they are\u2026 It is, pretty obviously, a boast disguised as a complaint.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

A Compelling \u201cWardrobe\u201d<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

How can we fight these influences? Paul encourages us to ask three key questions.<\/p>

First,\u00a0what are we wearing?:<\/u> “holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with\u2026and forgiving each other\u2026just as the Lord forgave you… put on love\u2026 the perfect bond of unity<\/em>.\u201d (Col. 3:12-14)<\/p>

That imperative is in the second person plural. This is a\u00a0community<\/em>\u00a0exercise.<\/p>

Francis Schaeffer said, \u201clove is the ultimate apologetic\u201d. How countercultural this is in an increasingly polarized, cancel-driven, fractious campus culture!<\/p>

Second,\u00a0what rules us?<\/u>\u00a0Col. 3:15 says, \u201cLet the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body\u2026<\/em>\u201d Anxiety plagues the academy. In response,\u00a0one campus\u00a0<\/a>has created a \u201cpedagogical wellness specialist\u201d position to assist faculty.<\/p>

How countercultural is supernatural peace in a campus culture wracked with crippling anxiety!<\/p>

Third,\u00a0what dwells in us?<\/u>\u00a0Paul next says, \u201cLet the word of Christ richly dwell within you…<\/em>\u201d (Col. 3:16). As Princeton physicist\u00a0Bob Kaita<\/a>\u00a0once put it to me, faculty are often world-class scholars with 4th<\/sup>\u00a0grade understandings of the Christian faith. As the sweep of the biblical story seeps into our research, teaching, and service it will make a difference.<\/p>

How countercultural in a campus culture starved for meaning!<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Faculty Commons goal is that we would \u201cwillingly wrestle with the ever-challenging question:\u00a0\u2018As Christ-followers, what should we do in the academy?\u2019\u201d
