As I started my academic career as a young assistant professor, I wanted to make an impact. I was not, however, very open about my faith in academic settings due to fear of what people would think of me.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

All this changed when a colleague invited me to attend\u00a0A Common Call<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>virtual conference on October 17, 2020. As a result, I joined a virtual book discussion for one of the speaker’s books,\u00a0Sent<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0by Heather and Ashley Holleman; this is where the transformation started.<\/p>

Collective Wisdom<\/strong><\/p>

Being a part of this virtual group of faculty women has been pivotal to my growth as a Christian professor. The group did not end when we\u00a0finished\u00a0Sent<\/em>; we read several other books to help our personal and spiritual growth.<\/p>

This group provided a community wherein I could merge my faith with my professional life\u2014offering support, mentorship, and a shared sense of purpose. I regularly met with believing faculty navigating similar challenges, yielding a sense of understanding and camaraderie. This has been profound when faced with ethical dilemmas and professional challenges, as the group’s collective wisdom and shared experiences provide practical advice and spiritual support.<\/p>

Priceless Insights<\/strong><\/p>

For almost four years now, I have benefited from the mentorship this group offers. Experienced members with years of balancing their faith and professional responsibilities provide priceless insights and counsel. This has helped me make decisions that align with my Christian values, even when such decisions seem difficult.<\/p>

One such decision was to introduce myself on the first day of class as a Christian, conveying my hope that my faith\u2019s values would be reflected in my interactions with my students.<\/p>

Struggles Are Met with Prayer<\/strong><\/p>

Additionally, I have been inspired and motivated. The testimonies of others and how they overcame challenges and experienced God’s faithfulness in their careers have strengthened my faith and resolve.<\/p>

Struggles are met with prayer and encouragement, and successes are celebrated. I have learned to rely on God’s strength and wisdom in every aspect of my professional life.<\/p><\/blockquote>

I strongly encourage you to join one of Faculty Commons\u2019 small groups, even if it is a virtual group, as I am in. You will have a network of like-minded individuals with similar values and aspirations and a platform to discuss challenges, seek advice, and grow in faith.<\/p>

Academia can be demanding and isolating sometimes, but a community<\/a> that understands and supports your calling can make a difference as you sustain your faith and career.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
