How can I frame each of these elements of my teaching and advising to be student-centered, developmental, and even \u201credemptive\u201d in some way?\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;text-align: center\"><strong>I Became Safe<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In wrestling with this idea, I have landed on the phrase \u201ccheerful rigor.\u201d It is my way of synthesizing two pictures of Jesus: the one who attracted children and sinners because he was full of joy, and the one who carefully taught important truths with great earnestness.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the long-term benefits of a cheerful rigor approach\u2014and of sharing this approach with my students\u2014is that I believe I became a \u201csafe\u201d professor.\u00a0 Not a therapist, but one who would show support and solutions. This has allowed me to be in some tough and tender moments.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;text-align: center\"><strong>She Got the Tattoo Anyway<\/strong><\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400\">One day a student came into my office to discuss absences.\u00a0Her eyes were already wet from holding back tears. She disclosed that her dad had recently passed and she had been going home often.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The twist in the story was that she wanted to show me the tattoo she had gotten to remember him. She noted that he disliked tattoos, but she got it anyway. She shared \u201cI showed it to him so I could get to hear him yell at me one more time.\u201d\u00a0We laughed, cried, and figured out a humane path to make up the work so she would be prepared for the upcoming courses in the major.\u00a0<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Demonstrating love and accountability and making my \u201cheart\u201d clear to students is, for me, a way to represent the Kingdom of God in my classrooms.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-2427235 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"2427235\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-106e7fe\" data-id=\"106e7fe\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9f2d736 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"9f2d736\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/campus.cru.org\/faculty\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/652\/2025\/03\/unnamed.jpg?w=573\" title=\"unnamed\" alt=\"Rick Olsen is a Professor and Department Chair for UNCW\u2019s Communication Studies Department.
