{"id":7029,"date":"2026-02-19T12:52:56","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T17:52:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/campus.cru.org\/faculty\/?p=7029"},"modified":"2026-02-19T13:01:41","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T18:01:41","slug":"god-and-reason","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/campus.cru.org\/faculty\/2026\/god-and-reason\/","title":{"rendered":"God and Reason"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"7029\" class=\"elementor elementor-7029\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-5fb3db0 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"5fb3db0\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-58a925d\" data-id=\"58a925d\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e88f831 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e88f831\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Almost 15 years ago the Christian student groups here at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia were holding a \u201cJesus Week\u201d and wanted a panel of Christian professors to answer any faith-related questions that students might have.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-7229e92 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"7229e92\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-ac7735f\" data-id=\"ac7735f\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6283a0f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6283a0f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"m_-7472433293293959344mcePastedContent\">This sounded scary &#8212; Christianity has generally been viewed very critically by faculty and students here in Canada. But there were four of us Christian professors who knew each other from our faculty Bible study, and we agreed to give it a try. The panel drew a surprisingly large number of students and created lively and constructive discussions.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>A Public Lecture Series<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"m_-7472433293293959344mcePastedContent\">The response to our panel made it clear how many students wanted to explore these questions of science and Christian faith further. Over time, the four of us developed the vision of offering a public lecture series entitled\u00a0<em>God and Reason<\/em>\u00a0as a safe space where students could ask critical questions, discover that such faith is not unreasonable, and get to know some Christians.<\/p><p class=\"m_-7472433293293959344mcePastedContent\">Now each fall and spring semester since then we have presented eight lectures, including:<\/p><ul><li class=\"m_-7472433293293959344mcePastedContent\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Does God exist?<\/li><li class=\"m_-7472433293293959344mcePastedContent\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Is the Bible reliable?<\/li><li class=\"m_-7472433293293959344mcePastedContent\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Why do so many people follow Jesus?<\/li><li class=\"m_-7472433293293959344mcePastedContent\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Can humanity flourish in a post-Christian world?<\/li><li class=\"m_-7472433293293959344mcePastedContent\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Artificial Intelligence and the future of humanity<\/li><\/ul><p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>A Diverse Mix<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"m_-7472433293293959344mcePastedContent\"><em>God and Reason<\/em> is organized as an SFU student club and works closely with other Christian student groups. The student groups promote it, organize the lecture room, provide food, and then follow-up with students who want to know more. We professors speak for 30 minutes, followed by 20 minutes of Q&amp;A, and then talk more with students who stay for the food.<\/p><p class=\"m_-7472433293293959344mcePastedContent\">The\u00a0<em>God and Reason<\/em> lectures draw a diverse mix of Christians, Muslims, agnostics, and atheists. Some show up only once, some attend many lectures, and some even come back the next semester.\u00a0<\/p><blockquote>We are so encouraged when a student says, \u201cYou are the first one to explain Christian faith so that it makes sense to me.\u201d<\/blockquote><p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>A Sense of Warmth and Safety<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"m_-7472433293293959344mcePastedContent\">One doctoral computer science student said: \u201cI discovered the\u00a0<em>God and Reason\u00a0<\/em>lecture series in the first weeks of starting my Ph.D. at SFU, going through a\u00a0particularly difficult time in my life. Perhaps the uniqueness of these lectures is the intellectual and emotional honesty and integrity that is always present.<\/p><p class=\"m_-7472433293293959344mcePastedContent\">\u201cThere is always room for questions that can challenge one&#8217;s core beliefs, and yet such questions are not shied away from \u2013 they are welcomed. That is a very rare thing, to be treasured, and I am grateful to have been able to share in it. There was always a sense of warmth and safety while exploring Christianity in the lectures, and the lectures dispelled many misconceptions I had about Christianity, accelerating my own path towards becoming Christian.\u201d<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Strength in Diversity<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"m_-7472433293293959344mcePastedContent\">The four of us professors come from very different academic disciplines and Christian backgrounds, which has actually proven to be a strength, as long as we maintain the unity of the Spirit.
