{"id":2261,"date":"2020-08-12T21:18:02","date_gmt":"2020-08-13T01:18:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/campus.cru.org\/high-school\/indy\/?page_id=2261"},"modified":"2020-08-12T21:18:02","modified_gmt":"2020-08-13T01:18:02","slug":"root-idols","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/campus.cru.org\/high-school\/indy\/root-idols\/","title":{"rendered":"Root Idols"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\t<p><strong>Idolatry<\/strong> is a common sin with which we all struggle.<\/p>\n<p>However, when we think of idolatry, particularly in the Bible, we picture it in terms of bowing down to some kind of carved statue.<\/p>\n<p>But just because we haven\u2019t worshiped a statue of Zeus or the Statue of Liberty doesn\u2019t mean we\u2019re innocent of idolatry.<\/p>\n<h3><b>An idol can be anything we believe we need, apart<br \/>\nfrom Christ, to fulfill us.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Idols offer a counterfeit to aspects of God\u2019s identity and character. They represent broken cisterns for which we trade fountains of living water.<\/p>\n<p>As a result,\u00a0<b>we shouldn\u2019t think about idolatry as one sin among others but rather as a root sin that expresses itself in a variety of ways.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If idolatry is a root sin, the fruits of that sin\u2014the \u201cfruit sins\u201d\u2014are the things you look to apart from God in order to find identity, security and hope.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if my idol is power, my fruit sins might be greed and a lack of generosity.<\/p>\n\t<p><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>Now this I say and\u00a0testify in the Lord,\u00a0that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do,\u00a0in the futility of their minds.\u00a0<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>They\u00a0are darkened in their understanding,\u00a0alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to\u00a0their hardness of heart.\u00a0<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>They\u00a0have become callous and\u00a0have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.\u00a0<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>But that is not the way you\u00a0learned Christ!\u2014\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>assuming that\u00a0you have heard about him and\u00a0were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,\u00a0<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>to\u00a0put off\u00a0your old self,<sup data-fn=\"#fen-ESV-29278f\" data-link=\"[&lt;a href=&quot;#fen-ESV-29278f&quot; title=&quot;See footnote f&quot;&gt;f&lt;\/a&gt;]\">[<a title=\"See footnote f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ephesians%204&amp;version=ESV#fen-ESV-29278f\">f<\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through\u00a0deceitful desires,\u00a0<sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>and\u00a0to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,\u00a0<sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>and to put on\u00a0the new self,\u00a0created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.<\/p>\n<p>Ephesians 4:17:24<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/campus.cru.org\/high-school\/indy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/78\/2020\/08\/ROOTtoFRUIT-1.jpg\" alt=\"ROOTtoFRUIT\" height=\"764\" width=\"712\" title=\"ROOTtoFRUIT\" \/>\n\t<p>Even though we know God we often don\u2019t honor him as God. We worship the created things rather than the creator God. The problem with this is that it is so subtle. Each of us could look up at this list and see a couple of idols that we struggle with. So how do we deal with the idols of our hearts? How do we gain freedom from these idols that enslave us and ruin our lives?<\/p>\n<h3>We renew our minds<\/h3>\n<p>I would argue that every sin is rooted into a lie. It&#8217;s easy to see the fruit, but it is harder to see the root of the sin. There are four root idols that all sin is rooted into.<\/p>\n<p>POWER<\/p>\n<p>CONTROL<\/p>\n<p>COMFORT<\/p>\n<p>APPROVAL<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tthe four root idols\n\t<\/h2>\n<h2>\n\t\tpower\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>a longing for influence or recognition<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tcontrol\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>a longing to have everything go according to my plan<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tcomfort\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>a longing for living in a walled garden<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tapproval\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>a longing to be accepted or desired<\/p>\n\t<p>So how do you renew your mind? You ask yourself these 3 questions and see the Gospel truths of who God is below the questions:<\/p>\n<h3>1- What am I not believing in Jesus? (power, control, comfort, approval)<\/h3>\n<h3>2- What is Jesus saying to you about himself? (God is Great, Glorious Good, Gracious)<\/h3>\n<h3>3- What are you going to do about it?<\/h3>\n<h2>\n\t\tGod is&#8230;\n\t<\/h2>\n<h2>\n\t\tGreat\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>so we don&#8217;t have to be in control<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tGlorious\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>so we don&#8217;t have to fear others<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tGood\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>so we don&#8217;t have to look elsewhere<\/p>\n<h2>\n\t\tGracious\n\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>so we don&#8217;t have to prove ourselves<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Idolatry is a common sin with which we all struggle.
