If you want to see a spiritual movement happen on a high school campus, a teacher sponsor is essential. In most schools, nothing can officially happen without one. That’s not a barrier, it’s an opportunity. Teacher sponsors are one of the key players in helping students reach their school.
A teacher sponsor is key to being an official club on campus. Every school has a system of clubs that meet at various times, and each club has a teacher who serves as the official connection to the administration. The sponsor helps you find a room, communicates with school leadership, and is often required to be present at meetings.
You cannot have an on campus club without a teacher sponsor.
A teacher sponsor serves as the bridge between the ministry and the school. They help navigate school policies, communicate with administration, and ensure everything is done the right way. From securing a meeting space to completing required paperwork, they make it possible for students to lead with confidence and clarity.
But this role is more than just signing forms. A great teacher sponsor becomes a trusted adult in the movement. They offer wisdom, encouragement, and stability. They help students think through challenges, stay aligned with school expectations, and grow as leaders. When needed, they can also open doors by connecting students to other teachers, staff, or resources on campus.
What to Look for in a Teacher Sponsor
Any teacher can do a great job as a teacher sponsor, but here are some characteristics that can make a big difference:
A Believer
It’s important that the teacher sponsor has a relationship with Christ and shares a desire to see students know Jesus.
Respected by the Administration
A teacher who is trusted and respected by school leadership brings credibility to your group. Their reputation can make things run more smoothly and help navigate challenges if they arise.
Liked by Students
If students enjoy being around the teacher sponsor, it removes barriers and can even help attract more students to the group.
Missional
An ideal teacher sponsor has a heart to see students know Jesus and make Him known. They are excited about students reaching their peers and are willing to use their influence to support that vision.
Every teacher engages this role a little differently. Some are highly involved, helping students plan and problem solve. Others take a step back, offering support when needed while allowing students to lead. Both approaches can work. What matters most is that students know they have a supportive adult who believes in them and is willing to stand with them.
Teacher sponsors make student led ministry on campus possible.
A Note on the Role
Teacher sponsors often walk a fine line. In many schools, they are not allowed to lead spiritual discussions and may be cautious about how involved they are. They may feel the weight of wanting to support students while also protecting their job.
Because of that, communication matters. Have honest conversations about what they are comfortable with. Keep them informed about what is happening. Be respectful of their boundaries and their role within the school.
A good teacher sponsor is hard to find, so take very good care of yours.
If you are a teacher sponsor, thank you. You play a vital role in what God is doing on your campus. Your willingness to step in, support students, and help create space for a movement makes more impact than you may ever see. Students cannot do this without you, and we are deeply grateful for the way you serve.
